With the power crisis South Africa is facing over the next few years, I feel I should cheer any positive steps taken to reduce electricity demand; but I still don&#039;t understand why the hell they don&#039;t just go out there and change every traffic light to LED, allow individuals to feed power back to the grid, increase public awareness of power issues, encourage PV panel manufacture in South Africa, support energy-efficient technologies, and so on.

In fact, Cape Town is working towards having solar water heaters on all new houses built, and South Africa plans to ban incandescent bulbs, but with the billions Eskom is planning to spend on new generation capacity, they could be doing a lot more with a bit of leadership and coordinated effort. It seems like everything is a &quot;pilot project&quot;, even for proven technologies.</description>
