On my previous post on chardust, is a..
A question for you *KTā??s and KRā??s, keyboard/pajama activists, bloggers, would you donate/pay 5 dollars or more on a site to pay for reforestation – such that someone in Kenya is paid a dollar for each tree they plant; be it on public or private property?
input that i would like to highlight…
bankelele
Tree planting is becoming another divide between the haveā??s and the have notā??s. The poor use all their land for food and (maybe) some cash crops, while those with excess land can devote acreage to trees for several years and reap the huge profits that mature trees can deliver.
The poor expect others to plant trees or the forests to always be there – and it is embedded in African culture i.e kids are sent out into the forst to collect firewood for cooking.
So the group of KTā??s and KRā??s must create a sense of ownership among the community where the project will be based.
and
Tax benefit: The Standard today reports that Panpaper will receive a 5% tax waiver for planting 600,000 ha of trees and the project will be financed through the IFC. Perhaps more corporates can be enticed?
Mental, Whis and Keguro have already expressed interest…do chime in with your thoughts!
Update: If you have some companies/organizations in mind that are based in Kenya (preferably with a website) please pass along the information, and do check out the comments section for some great input from everyone!

Absolutely Not. I will not pay anyone to plant trees.
I would consider buying the trees for them to plant though.
Aside from this, I might be stating the obvious but does the set of KTs and KR just consist of Kenyans period?
The initiative would be kenyan bloggers based but the idea is to begin giving ourselves then pass it along to anyone who would be willing to give for reforestation. Unajuana na Gates? We can have him jipox as a KT if he wants! (oh btw check out mama junkyard’s post on jipoxers)
Maybe we should look at an economically sustainable long term tree project. As bankelele points out sometimes harsh economic realities get in the way of reforestation. However tree growing is now a booming business in Kenya. The money you can make from growing trees can equal and many times beat any shamba. We can use this to our advantage because if people are making money from trees it benefits them to have tree friendly practices, for example plant two acres for every one acre you cut down etc. and since tree growing runs on a five year cycle there will never be a time when all tree are down, there will always be some growing while others are harvested. Trees as way of economic independence as well as the massive long term ecological benefits.
I am in too, sign me up!
I’m with Ntwiga on this one. I’d rather we buy trees for them to plant.
I had a conversation with this guy a while back. he had acres of land that he didnt know what to do with but was telling me about the new big thing – plant shedloads of trees then chop and sell them. apparently you make a fortune.
Now, if i signed up to your idea of paying/donating a dollar to people who plant trees, how can i be sure that they wont then cut down that tree and sell it for more money?
The points you’ve all made are helpful in figuring out the most expedient way to go, I think the suggestion to buy trees for them (kenyans – i am sure we will have to decide who to start with) to plant is a really good one. I was also thinking along the lines of working with Wangari Maathai, our part would be the donating bit, sign on give afew dollars, pass the word and see if it can be infectious enough to have oprah (its ok…to laugh – everyone asks her for cash) donate something, and have enough momentum to have more cash for tree planting available. Abit of work to do, please feel free to contribute ideas towards this. So very grateful guys.
This is a good idea but I think we should buy the seeds and leave something extra for the planters as a way of supporting our jobless kin stay off crime. What do ya’ll think?
I liked the move. This could of course promote a good cause.. I came across this site. Just wanted to share it. Itā??s on an organization that is dedicated to planting trees along Houston’s streets and freeways. I got the link from this site.
